Welcome to our Introduction to Leatherworking class where creativity meets craftsmanship! This hands-on workshop is designed for beginners eager to explore the art of leatherworking. Over the course of the class, you will learn essential principles and techniques that will equip you to create beautiful leather goods. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a finished leather wallet, a keychain, and a pattern to continue your leatherworking journey at home.

Course Overview

The workshop begins with an introduction to leather selection. Understanding the different types of leather—such as vegetable-tanned, chrome-tanned, and suede—is crucial for choosing the right material for your projects. We’ll discuss the characteristics of each type, how they age, and what makes them suitable for various applications.

Next, we’ll move on to leather cutting. You will learn how to measure and mark your leather accurately, ensuring your pieces are cut with precision. We’ll cover the tools you’ll need, including rotary cutters, knives, and cutting mats, and demonstrate the best techniques to achieve clean edges.

Once your leather pieces are cut, we’ll prepare them for assembly. Leather preparation includes processes like sanding edges and removing any imperfections. This step is vital to ensure a polished final product. You’ll also learn about pattern making, which is essential for designing your projects. You’ll create a simple pattern that will guide your cutting and assembly, laying the groundwork for your wallet and keychain.

With your leather ready, we’ll dive into hole punching. Properly placed holes are crucial for stitching and securing rivets. You’ll get hands-on experience using different types of punches, learning how to create holes that are evenly spaced and sized correctly for your chosen hardware.

Next, we’ll introduce copper rivet hammering. Rivets are a fantastic way to reinforce seams and add decorative elements to your projects. You’ll learn the techniques for properly setting rivets, ensuring they hold strong while enhancing the aesthetic of your leather goods.

Hand stitching is a fundamental skill in leatherworking, and we’ll dedicate time to this technique as well. You’ll learn how to use a needle and waxed thread to stitch your leather pieces together securely. We’ll cover various stitch types, including saddle stitching, which is known for its durability and strength. This method not only secures your leather but also adds a beautiful finish to your work.

As we approach the final stages of your projects, we’ll discuss hand finishing techniques. This includes methods for smoothing and sealing edges, giving your leather a professional look. We’ll also explore burnishing, a technique that polishes edges and enhances the leather’s appearance. You’ll learn how to use tools such as edge tools and natural burnishing agents to create a refined finish.

By the end of the workshop, you will have crafted a functional leather wallet and a stylish keychain, showcasing the skills you’ve learned throughout the class. Additionally, you will leave with a pattern for future projects, allowing you to continue honing your leatherworking skills at home.

This introduction to leatherworking class is not just about learning techniques; it’s about igniting your creativity and inspiring you to create beautiful, handcrafted items. Join us for a day filled with craftsmanship, creativity, and camaraderie as you embark on your leatherworking journey! Whether you aim to create personalized gifts or dive deeper into the art of leathercraft, this workshop will provide you with the foundational skills and confidence to pursue your passion. We can’t wait to see what you create!
